What does a good skin care regimen look like?

There are three main components of a good skin care regimen:

1. Exfoliation:  This is the process of taking away the top layer of the skin, or the Stratum Corneum. It is similar to the effect of polishing a car; it may last for for a very short time but if done everyday, it will break down the skin layer by layer.  You will start to notice that you have reached your deeper layers of skin when it starts to feel “raw” or little “red”.  When this occurs, the deeper layer creates some inflammation which stimulates new collagen recruitment.  The collagen will provide some tightening effect of the skin.  This in conjunction with smoothing out the skin surface with the exfoliation process, may also stimulate increased growth of collagen, creating an overall effect of smoother and tighter skin.

There are three main methods to exfoliate: mechanical, chemical, and energy-based. An example of a mechanical method is Microdermabrasion.  Microdermabrasion at a spa is the best ans safest method of use.  However, it is expensive and time-consuming.  Traditionally, scrubbing your facial skin with a sponge such as a Buff-Puff everyday in the shower may provide a more economical way to exfoliate the skin.  If you have acne-prone skin,  use milder products such as Cetaphil or white Dial soap with the sponging. Other great products to use are Skinceutical‘s cleansers. They are medical grade products and are excellent for all skin types.

Chemical Methods includes products that contain chemicals such as salicyclic acid, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, or beta hydroxy acid that helps to soften the top skin layer (stratum corneum) by disrupting the adhesion between the cells. Energy-Based Methods is when energy from a laser, ultrasonic, or radiofrequency source can also disrupt the top layer of the skin.

2. Rejuvenation: There are many different things that you can do to help tighten and refine your skin. Skin rejuvenation methods can help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, and more. PhotoFacial is a great way to help rejuvenate your skin. PhotoFacial uses an Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, to help treat such skin conditions as mentioned. The IPL helps stimulate the deeper layers of skin and by doing this, it allows the skin to produce more collagen. By producing more collagen, it creates a new outer layer of skin resulting in tighter, younger looking skin.

3. Protection: It is very important to protect your skin in order to minimize unnecessary sun exposure and tanning. Overexposure to UV light can cause serious skin damage no matter your skin color or skin type. The best thing for you to do to prevent overexposure to UV light is to wear protective sunscreen with a good SPF. The higher the SPF level, the greater amount of protection it offers. Another great way to protect your skin is by using a vitamin C product for your skin. Skinceutical’s CE Ferulic is  a strong line reducing concentrate that is clinically-proven to improve overall skin texture, tone and radiance while reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C also provides anti-oxidant protection helping your skin look younger and tighter.
